Spelling for the Week June 14-18, 2021

This is our spelling assignment for the week. Send/turn in photos on Friday, once all the activities below are completed.

Now that it is January, we will begin to write a heading on all our notebook work. You may continue to use your blue and white notebook for spelling work, or you can start to use the green dot notebook from the beginning of the year. (The one we used to practice our letter writing.)
At this point in the school year, we begin to transition to students writing on one line space in a regular black and white notebook. Please guide your child to do this. Students that continue to use the blue and white spelling notebook, will still use two line spaces. By February, all students should be using the green dot notebook and writing on one line space. Please show your child to skip a line when writing on one line space to make it easier for them to read back what they have written.

When writing in your notebook, make sure to go to the next clean page and write our school heading:
PS 32 your name(first and last)
1-243 Date
Start at the second line (inside the blue lines, not above the blue line)
We will begin using our heading each time we write in our notebook and papers.

Poems 6/16/21 in Google Classroom

Poems 6/16/21

This week we are learning about poetry and try writing some poems of our own.

We have been learning how poems try to paint a picture and convey feeling without using a lot of words. Often authors do this by using their five senses to come up with descriptive words to convey their message. They also use descriptive words or words that will bring an image into mind.

We learned about a type of poem today that is called an Acrostic poem. In this poem the author spells out a word vertically, then they write words or phrases that fit the topic of the word.

See the attachment below.

We will write an Acrostic poem today using our five senses. Choose one of the attached poem papers to write your own Acrostic poem. Or write your own.

Submit your poem when complete. Please keep your poem in your writing folder because we will each have a turn to read our favorite poem to the class on Friday.

XTRA math in Google Classroom

XTRA math

Login in to XTRA math daily and practice your math facts for 10-15 minutes or more each day, to help you memorize your facts and develop fact fluency.

Please note that this is not an optional assignment. Daily practice is a necessity in order for your child to develop fact fluency. I will begin counting this weekly grade as one of our math tests. Your child receives 20 points for each day of practice, regardless of their score within the program itself.

So for example: If your child only goes on for three days, then your child's score on Friday will be 60/100. If they go on for four days it will be 80/100, all five days earns 100/100.

Every Friday at 3 pm, I will check the report generated by the program on usage for the week and grade accordingly.

Submit this assignment on Friday after you have practiced each day.

PS 32 your name(first and last)
1-243 Date
Start at the second line (inside the blue lines, not above the blue line)

Each day we will learn how we can use and transfer our skills as opinion writers to help us write reviews.

This week we will be writing a review of our favorite movie.

Today we learned how good writers brainstorm reasons why the like or dislike things when writing reviews.
Complete the graphic organizer below by:

writing the name of the movie you will review in the center oval
color in the amount of stars you would give this movie based on your own opinion of the movie.
If you loved it, you would give 5 stars, if you liked it you would give four stars, if you thought it was good but not great three stars and so on. If you do not recommend this movie you would give it one or two stars.
In each of the four squares you will brainstorm reasons why you are giving this movie the amount of stars you are. You need to think about what you like or dislike about the movie. For example: The characters? The setting? The action or adventure? The costumes or colorful animation? The story line? ETC..

Submit your work and save it in your writing folder to use tomorrow.

Today we learned about two non-fiction text features: diagrams and captions. As you create a new animal report of information, you will add these two new text features into your report today.

As part of our informative writing unit, today you will create a new report of information on an animal of your choosing. I have added some new articles for you to choose from below.

1.Choose one article from below. Print this article out and annotate facts you find that you may want to include in your report of information.

2. Create an introduction, write four or more facts and a conclusion on to your graphic organizer.

3.Copy the introduction, facts and conclusion that you have on your graphic organize, on to your writing paper.

4. Reread each sentence as you write, before writing your next sentence. You want to read what you are writing as you write to make sure it makes sense. Be sure to add details as you go if you can.

4. After you have copied your graphic organizer neatly on to your writing paper, draw a picture of you animal and include labels that teach more to the reader. We learned how often in a non fiction report there will be a photo that is a diagram of the topic that they are informing us about. Include a diagram in your drawing today. We also learned that a caption is a sentence or two that you often find under picture in a non-fiction text that tells you more about the picture or gives you additional information.

5. Design a cover for your report of information and staple all the pages together when you are done.

Use the checklist and the rubric to self monitor and self assess your work prior to submitting it.

Today we read the story the Recess Queen in class. We discussed the character traits of the two main characters in this story. We also continued discussing what it means to show respect for others and we talked about which characters were respectful and which ones were not.

1. Complete the graphic organizers below for each character: Mean Jean and Katie Sue. Be sure to include text evidence to support the trait you give. See the example that is attached to the other graphic organizers below.

We also discussed how we can be a recess "friend" instead of a recess "queen." A recess friend includes others when they play and treats others with kindness.

2. On the slide below, type in to tell something you can do to be a recess friend to others.

Your child receives 20 points for each day of practice, regardless of their score within the program itself.

So for example: If your child only goes on for three days, then your child's score on Friday will be 60/100. If they go on for four days it will be 80/100, all five days earns 100/100.

3. Reread your annotated article from yesterday and add facts you found in your article on to the fact boxes in your graphic organizer. Be sure to put the facts into your own words. We may copy some of what the article said, but you cannot copy the article over word for word. Try your best to tell the facts you learned in your own words.

4. Complete the graphic organizer with a conclusion. Remember a conclusion is a way to "wrap it up" and let your reader know you are done teaching them about this topic.

Submit it when completed.

Remember to do the following:

Informative Writing-Annotating Tuesday January 19th in Google Classroom

Informative Writing-Annotating Tuesday January 19th

Today we learned how good writers prepare to write their reports of information by reading and annotating articles they read on their topic.

Choose an animal article from below that you would like to use to for your next animal report of information.
As you read your article today, use your pencil or a highlighter to underline facts and important information you are finding.

Please note that when you "annotate" by underlining or highlighting information, you will not be underlining or highlighting everything you read. Choose just facts and information. It may be a few words, part of a sentence and sometimes most of a sentence, but it will not be everything.

Submit it when completed.

Spelling for the Week January 11-15, 2021 in Google Classroom

Spelling for the Week January 11-15, 2021

Monday : write words 1-10 3 times each in spelling notebook

Tuesday : write words in ABC order in spelling notebook

Wednesday: Write a sentence for each spelling word: 1-5.

Thursday - Write a sentence for each spelling word: 6-10.
